Caring for your custom kitchen cabinets

Caring for your custom kitchen cabinets

You needn't treat your fine kitchen cabinets with kid gloves - Holiday Kitchens crafts cabinets with durability and beauty in mind. After all, you live in your kitchen.

But to showcase the beauty of your custom designed kitchen, we recommend the following.

Wood Cabinet Care

  • Use a mild soap, not harsh abrasive cleaners after installation and thereafter twice a year, We recommend Murphy's Wood Cleaner and a damp, soft cloth. Caution: do not soak cabinetry. Only use damp cloths because prolonged water exposure can damage cabinetry.
  • Always dry cabinets after cleaning with a soft cloth to eliminate moisture.
  • Polish with a top quality liquid paste wax. DO NOT use a wax that contains cleaners and/or silicone, as these products have a harmful, deteriorating effect on any finish. Guardsman polish is recommended.
  • Remove moisture that collects near the sink, oven, range or dishwasher.
  • Control humidification of your home is an asset to your furniture as well as to your cabinetry.  There needs to be a good balance between dry and moist conditions.  A stable humidity content of 35% to 50% in the cabinet area must be maintained to have this product guaranteed.

Laminate Cabinet Care

  • After installation wipe laminate areas with a damp, soft cloth. It may be necessary to use a mild liquid detergent or a non-abrasive household cleaner. Rinse with water and a clean non-abrasive damp cotton cloth.
  • Smears or streaks may be removed using a mild glass cleaner and a clean non-abrasive cotton cloth.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners, scouring pads, acids or alkene cleaners because they can damage, mar or permanently discolor laminates. When in doubt about a cleaning product or detergent, please check with its manufacturer.
  • Remove contact adhesive using a clean, non-abrasive cotton cloth and an adhesive solvent such as a lacquer thinner. Read and follow all warnings and instructions on the container label.

Linseed Oil Finish Care

  • The key to keeping a linseed oil finished product looking and lasting for years is to properly care for your wood cabinetry.
  • Normal Use & Wear Repair:  Use Murphy's Oil Soap (spray application ready to use product) for normal use and wear surface cleaning. This can normally be found in the cleaning supply areas of most stores.  Spray the surface of the product with a light coat of Murphy's Oil Soap and wipe with a soft cloth until the surface is clean.  Only use a soft cloth, never use an abrasive sponge or scouring pad.

    1. Next, wipe the surface with an additional soft cloth or micro cloth wiping with the grain to a soft dry luster.
    2. Last, if you want a soft re-oiled look to the surface, please use the lemon oil product supplied.  Refer to the instructions under Minor Repair step b for application instructions.  This deepens the grain and color and creates a nice, rich look.  Silicone sprays or other solvent type products are forbidden on this finish.

Minor Repair:  Minor surface damage may need to be repaired, due to spots or small abrasions.

Use the 30 micron paper provided in the kit.  Sand the area lightly working with the grain until the spot or scratch is removed, feathering out the repair area to help blend the color back to normal.

    1. Next recoat with the color of oil that your cabinetry was originally finished in.  Following are the three colors available:    Light Oil 801, Medium Oil 802 or Dark Oil 803.  All three finishes are offered on Cherry, Alder, Oak, and in character of each.
    2. Application should be with a soft cloth dipped into the material and applied over the surface in an even wet manner. Wipe in a circular motion to work the oil into the wood.  Use a clean soft cloth to wipe off the excess material, making sure that a uniform coat has been applied and all wet areas disappear with the final wipe with the grain.  Tight corners or profiles of inset panels may need to be worked in with a soft brush.  The product must sit for at least 48 hours after application, and repeat the application step if you feel the area repaired needs additional color or build.

Surface Damage Repair:  Surface damage repair may be necessary, due to excessive wear and tear, or the need to resurface.

    1. Using the 80 micron paper provided in the Repair Kit, sand the entire repair area, working with the grain, making sure you are down to the raw wood surface.  You may still see some color that has penetrated into the wood.
    2. Clean all sanding particles from the surface by wiping it with a soft cloth, and if necessary use a soft brush to clean around profiles or hard to get areas.
    3. It is important that the linseed oil finish is stirred properly before application and occasionally stirred during use.
    4. Next recoat with the proper Light Oil 801, Medium Oil 802 or Dark Oil 803, depending on the color you selected.
    6. The product must sit for at least 48 hours after application.  You may repeat the application step to bring the product back to the original color. Compare the repaired area to other parts of your cabinetry for your color comparison while blending.

Warranty:  Routine maintenance will be required at least once a year for the first three years.  Because maintenance cannot be controlled by the manufacturer, finish and cracking will not qualify under our warranty

IMPORTANT -  *Fire Hazard Warning*  Rags containing linseed oil can self ignite in a very short time frame (matter of minutes) under certain conditions and should be properly disposed of.  You must follow the proper procedure below for each step taken and dispose of the rags in the correct manner.

Internal Combustion can cause fires by leaving rags unattended after the application. Do not leave the area with rags during the process. This is a safe product if all guidelines are followed. A combination of rags, air, humidity and linseed oil causes internal heat that starts the ignition process. Rags will not ignite during use, only if the rags are piled and are not disposed of properly.

After each application completely disperse the rags in water to fully saturate. Place the rags in a self-sealing plastic bag or seal with a wire twist tie. This offsets the reaction and can then be safely placed outside until picked up by trash service.

Please make sure this policy is carried out for proper disposal and safety.
